Training with practice?
We have "Talent meets training" in Hagen a.T.W.!
Over 600 young people took the opportunity to get to know regional companies: 610 pupils from Hagen, Hasbergen and Georgsmarienhütte met 46 companies from the region at the anniversary event of the "Talent meets Training" training fair at the Oberschule Hagen a.T.W. secondary school. The aim of the fair: practical career guidance and an effective way of recruiting young talent for companies.

The exhibition stands were deliberately kept simple - but the content took centre stage. HR managers and trainees answered questions, explained job profiles and offered one thing above all: concrete work samples with which young people could try out typical tasks. From building metal pen stands at Salzgitter Automotive Engineering, to cutting slate hearts at Weber Dach, to sawing candlesticks at the Kull joinery - the young people were able to actively experience which skills are required in the training occupations.
MaßArbeit board member Lars Hellmers emphasised the value of the practical elements: "The work samples are particularly important to us. Many talents only become apparent when young people try things out for themselves." This was also confirmed by schoolgirls from the Oesede grammar school: although their original interests went in completely different directions, they discovered a surprisingly new enthusiasm at the Otten horticultural company. Vanessa Otten reported that her current employee Jannik Michel found his way into the company precisely through this trade fair format.
Although many pupils are familiar with the regional companies, they are not aware of the variety of apprenticeships available there. Hubert Hanesch, trainer at Pötter Klima, explained: "Many know where we are based, but not what we actually do. Here they can find out - and also try it out." Eight trainees are currently being trained as mechatronics engineers for refrigeration technology at the company; one of them was able to give direct impressions of his day-to-day training.
Smart Fact
In 2025, the fair will continue at the Oberschule am Roten Berg in Hasbergen - as part of a platform for practical career guidance in the Osnabrück region that has been steadily growing and developing since 2015.
The event was organised by the School-Business Service Centre of MaßArbeit, Hagen secondary school and the municipality of Hagen. "Attracting young talent is crucial for our companies," emphasised Mayor Christine Möller. Hellmers added: "It is important for young people to find prospects here in the region - and that is exactly what this fair supports."
A central element was the running book that the young people had prepared in class: at least six company contacts were to be documented, important school subjects noted, questions formulated and impressions recorded. Headmaster Michael Koslik emphasised how much this tool improved the quality of the interviews.
The evening before, 55 young people had the opportunity to present themselves to the companies in short job interviews at speed meetings - supported and accompanied by their parents, who were involved as important advisors.
